Charli xcx is pushing the boundaries of what she has dubbed her "rock music" phase, unveiling a new single and accompanying music video titled "SS26." The name is a direct reference to the fashion industry's Spring/Summer 2026 season, offering fans a backstage pass to the pop star's recent immersion in high-end couture. Before the official visual dropped, she treated followers to a 30-minute "Pre Show" on YouTube, documenting her process of selecting and modeling an array of designer outfits. These included pieces from Zadig & Voltaire—a label previously featured in the "Rock Music" video—and Lou de Bètoly, which she wore at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival. The "SS26" video itself features Charli playfully posing for the camera in a series of striking ensembles, further blurring the line between music and fashion. This trend is part of a broader movement among artists who increasingly use clothing as a narrative tool to enhance their musical storytelling, creating a more immersive multimedia experience for audiences.
The promotional rollout for "SS26" has been a multi-platform affair. Earlier this week, the singer teased the release by posting the song's lyrics on her Substack newsletter, a platform she has used to connect directly with her most dedicated fans. She also shared a stylized digital flyer on social media, inviting followers to "attend the presentation of Charli xcx SS26 directed by Torso." Like its predecessor "Rock Music," the new track was co-written and co-produced with her long-time collaborators, A.G. Cook and Finn Keane. A.G. Cook, the founder of the influential PC Music label, has been a key architect of Charli's avant-garde pop sound for nearly a decade, shaping hits like "Vroom Vroom" and "Boys." Finn Keane, also known by his production alias EasyFun, has contributed to many of her most experimental tracks, including "Track 10" from her 2017 mixtape "Pop 2." This release further dissolves the boundaries between music, fashion, and performance art, a signature element of Charli's recent creative output. For context, her 2024 album "Brat" was a cultural phenomenon, topping year-end lists and spawning a global tour, and her current work seems to build on that momentum by venturing into uncharted thematic territory.
The "rock music" era was sparked by a comment Charli made in a British Vogue cover story, where she declared, "I think the dancefloor is dead, so now we're making rock music." This remark ignited widespread speculation that her seventh studio album would pivot sharply toward guitar-driven sounds. However, she has since clarified the statement, posting behind-the-scenes footage from the "Rock Music" recording session with the caption: "A video of me making a song called 'rock music' that is not actually rock music which is funny because I never said I was making a rock album." In the same Vogue interview, she elaborated on her creative philosophy: "If I’d made another album that felt more dance-leaning, it would have felt really hard, really sad, but what’s interesting for me is to bend the possibilities of what my perspective on that could be. For me, it’s fun to flip the form. We know there’s gonna be people who are bothered by it, but that’s fine." This willingness to defy expectations has become a hallmark of her career, drawing comparisons to artists like Madonna and Björk, who have similarly redefined genre boundaries over time. Notably, Charli's 2019 album "Charli" featured collaborations with artists like Lizzo and Christine and the Queens, showcasing her ability to blend pop with experimental elements long before this current phase.
While concrete details about her rumored seventh studio album remain unconfirmed, Charli xcx shows no signs of slowing down. Following the massive success of her 2024 record "Brat," which included a global tour and a remix album featuring artists like Troye Sivan and Lorde, she also released her own film titled "The Moment." More recently, in February, she dropped the soundtrack for Emerald Fennell's adaptation of "Wuthering Heights," a project that featured collaborations with alternative icons John Cale of The Velvet Underground and Sky Ferreira. This relentless output suggests that, regardless of genre labels, Charli continues to operate in a space where music, film, and fashion intersect seamlessly. As one music industry analyst noted, "Charli xcx is no longer just making albums; she's constructing entire universes around each release, and 'SS26' is the latest chapter in that evolving narrative." The singer, known for her 2019 hit "1999" and her role in the horror film "Bodies Bodies Bodies," has consistently pushed the boundaries of pop music, and this latest project is no exception.
