Show moreSombr Makes It Rain at the American Music Awards With Splashy Version of ‘Homewrecker’
The American Music Awards unfolded in Las Vegas on Monday night, but an unexpected tribute to New York City ended up stealing the limelight. As much of the Big Apple endured a rainy Memorial Day weekend, singer Sombr brought the storm indoors, concluding his electrifying performance of "Homewrecker" with a stage-wide downpour. Clad in leather bell-bottoms and a loose black button-down shirt, his look was a striking contrast to the outfit he wore just minutes earlier while accepting the Best Alternative/Rock Song award for "Back to Friends." The Las Vegas venue, known for hosting blockbuster events like the Billboard Music Awards, provided a fitting backdrop for this dramatic spectacle.
Released in February and slated for Sombr's sophomore album later this year, "Homewrecker" has already secured a nomination for the Song of the Summer AMA Award. The track, which he also performed at the BRIT Awards earlier in 2024, is gaining momentum for the 20-year-old artist. His recent chart successes include singles like "Undressed," "Back to Friends," and "12 to 12," which have solidified his presence in the music scene. Earlier this year, he appeared on the Grammy Awards stage as a nominee for Best New Artist, competing against Addison Rae, Alex Warren, the Marías, Leon Thomas, Lola Young, Katseye, and Olivia Dean—the latter ultimately winning the prize. Notably, the Best New Artist category has historically served as a launchpad for future superstars, with past winners like Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa achieving global dominance. This year's diverse lineup highlighted the industry's shifting focus toward genre-blending talents and social media-driven careers.
Reflecting on his rapid ascent, Sombr told Variety in a 2023 episode of "Behind the Song": "I went to bed just a normal high school kid and I wake up the next day, it’s viral. Literally the next day. Every record label is in my inbox." This stands in stark contrast to the months prior, when his song submissions to labels went unanswered. When he told his father about the sudden flood of interest, "he was like, 'I don’t believe you.'" Yet, within days, Sombr was on a flight to Los Angeles, signing his first record deal. This swift journey from obscurity to stardom underscores a broader trend in the music industry, where platforms like TikTok can transform unknown artists into household names overnight. Industry analyst Mark Reynolds observes, "Sombr's story is a textbook example of how viral moments can rewrite an artist's career trajectory in hours, not years." Such narratives are becoming increasingly common, as streaming algorithms and social media algorithms prioritize shareable content over traditional gatekeeping. For context, TikTok's influence on music discovery has been profound, with over 70% of its users reporting that they find new artists on the platform, according to a 2023 industry report.
