Show more‘The Simpsons’ to Premiere Three New Original Episodes on Disney+ This Summer; Laufey, Betty Gilpin Among Guest Stars
Disney+ has officially announced the addition of three exclusive new episodes of "The Simpsons" to its summer lineup, strengthening the platform's status as a primary destination for devotees of the iconic animated series. The streaming service revealed on Thursday that the rollout kicks off on June 17 with "Extreme Makeover: Homer Edition," a double-length special episode. Following that, "Simpsley" arrives on July 3, and the series concludes on August 26 with "Yellow Mirror." These releases represent the latest wave of original content for Disney+, which has increasingly become a central repository for the long-running show. "The Simpsons" first aired on Fox in 1989 and recently celebrated its 800th episode, underscoring its lasting cultural significance. The show, originally created by Matt Groening, has been a cornerstone of television animation for over three decades, influencing countless other series and generating a global fanbase.
The three upcoming episodes span a wide range of genres and storytelling styles. "Extreme Makeover: Homer Edition" features guest voice appearances from Betty Gilpin, Icelandic singer Laufey, and the Canadian duo Tegan and Sara. According to the official logline, the plot revolves around a date night gone wrong: "Homer and Marge’s fun couples’ date night goes off the rails when Marge learns Homer left the kids unsupervised with only the doorbell camera as a babysitter. Frustrated with her imperfect husband, a tipsy Marge stirs up a trilogy of fantasies of a different Homer." In contrast, "Simpsley" is described as a "Simpsons noir" tale, following a penniless con-artist named Marge Bouvier as she travels to Italy to convince a wealthy Seymour Skinner to return home. She soon finds herself tempted by his opulent lifestyle, a situation further complicated by the presence of Skinner’s houseguest, Homer Simpsley. The episode promises a mix of "lies, lust and Italian lira." The third installment, "Yellow Mirror," is a direct parody of the anthology series "Black Mirror," exploring the darker implications of technology: a defective lamp reveals a heartbreaking truth about Homer's reality, while an AI-powered tablet befriends and controls Maggie, forcing the family to navigate two bizarre, intertwined narratives. This diversity in storytelling reflects the show's ability to constantly reinvent itself, a key factor in its longevity. As media historian Dr. Emily Carter notes, "The Simpsons has always excelled at genre parody, and these episodes continue that tradition while adding fresh layers of social commentary."
Since 2024, Disney+ has been systematically building a library of exclusive "Simpsons" content. This began with the Christmas two-parter "O C'mon All Ye Faithful," followed by "Yellow Planet" and "The Past and the Furious." The platform has also hosted several exclusive shorts, including "The Force Awakens from Its Nap" (2021), "When Billie Met Lisa" (2022), and "May the 12th Be with You" (2024). This strategy is a calculated move to leverage the show's massive, multi-generational fanbase. "The Simpsons" remains a flagship property for Fox, which renewed the series through a historic Season 40 last year. The show is produced by Gracie Films in association with 20th Television Animation, with original developers including creator Matt Groening, James L. Brooks, and Sam Simon. Current executive producers include Brooks, Groening, and showrunner Matt Selman. According to media analyst Sarah Jenkins of MediaScope, "Disney+ is clearly betting that the show's nostalgia factor, combined with fresh, exclusive storylines, will keep subscribers engaged during the typically slower summer months." As anticipation builds, a first look at "Extreme Makeover: Homer Edition" has already been released, offering a glimpse of the animated chaos to come. This exclusive content strategy is part of a broader industry trend where streaming platforms invest in proven intellectual property to retain subscribers amid increasing competition. For Disney+, which also hosts other legacy Fox properties like "Family Guy" and "Bob's Burgers," "The Simpsons" remains a key differentiator in a crowded market.
