Ariana Grande has unveiled the music video for her latest single, "Hate That I Made You Love Me," a visually striking production with horror undertones that features actor Justin Long. Directed by Christian Breslauer—who previously crafted the short film "Brighter Days Ahead" to accompany the deluxe edition of Grande's 2024 album, Eternal Sunshine—the video begins with a deeply unsettling sequence. Long is seen burying Grande in an underground bunker, surrounded by piles of black-and-white composition notebooks, each one labeled with her "insecurities." Cinematography was handled by Janusz Kamiński, the acclaimed filmmaker renowned for his long-standing collaboration with Steven Spielberg on classics such as Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. This stark visual language establishes a dark, introspective tone for the track, which signals the launch of a new musical chapter for the pop star. The video's haunting imagery has drawn comparisons to psychological thrillers, with fans noting its deliberate departure from the brighter aesthetics of her earlier work.
Grande has confirmed that "Hate That I Made You Love Me" serves as the lead single from her upcoming eighth studio album, titled "Petal," which is scheduled for release on July 31 through Republic Records. The project was executive-produced and co-written by Grande alongside Ilya, a producer who has collaborated with her since the "Dangerous Woman" era and most recently worked on Eternal Sunshine. The singer first announced the album in late April, describing it as "something that is full of life and growing through the cracks of something cold and hard and challenging." This cryptic description has ignited fan speculation about its thematic direction, with some interpreting the song as a breakup anthem or a commentary on public perception. Since her breakthrough with "The Way" in 2013, Grande has consistently blended personal vulnerability with pop craftsmanship, a hallmark evident in hits like "Thank U, Next" and "7 Rings." Music critic Amanda Petrusich of The New Yorker once observed that Grande's work often "transforms private pain into public catharsis," a sentiment that aligns with the raw emotional depth of this new track. Industry analysts have noted that "Petal" arrives at a pivotal moment, as Grande seeks to redefine her sound following the experimental pop of Eternal Sunshine.
In addition to the album, Grande is preparing for her "Eternal Sunshine" tour, which begins on June 6 at Oakland Arena in California. Originally linked to her 2024 album and its deluxe edition, "Brighter Days Ahead," the tour is expected to include material from the "Petal" era, such as live renditions of "Hate That I Made You Love Me." However, this may be one of her last tours for the foreseeable future. During a recent appearance on Amy Poehler's "Good Hang" podcast, Grande stated, "I don't want to say anything definitive… I do know that I'm very excited to do this small tour, but I think it might not happen again for a long, long, long, long, long time." This remark has fueled speculation about a potential hiatus from touring, as the singer shifts focus to other creative ventures. The video for the single is available below, offering a haunting preview of the visual landscape Grande has crafted for this new chapter. For context, Grande's previous tours, such as the "Sweetener World Tour" in 2019, grossed over $100 million globally, underscoring the massive scale of her live performances. The Oakland Arena, a venue with a capacity of nearly 20,000, is expected to host one of the tour's most anticipated stops, with tickets selling out within hours of their release.
