Jason Zhang Signs With Universal Music Greater China; UMG Also Invests in Thai Distributor Solution One

Universal Music Greater China (UMGC) has entered into a comprehensive agreement with Jason Zhang, a towering figure in Mandarin pop music. The collaboration spans recorded music, artist management, live events, and global outreach, and will be carried out in tandem with Zhang's own imprint, Planet Culture. With a career that has now stretched past two decades, Zhang has released more than 17 albums and EPs, and commands a massive online following of over 100 million across various Chinese social media networks. He etched his name in the record books as the first Chinese artist ever to receive the International Artist Award at the American Music Awards. Earlier this year, Zhang showcased his extraordinary concert appeal by performing 16 sold-out shows at Beijing National Stadium, commonly referred to as the Bird's Nest, over a span of 24 days. These concerts, part of his Future.Live — Leave For 1982 World Tour, attracted more than one million attendees combined. The Bird's Nest, originally constructed for the 2008 Summer Olympics, has since evolved into a premier destination for major cultural happenings in China, hosting everything from high-profile music concerts to international sporting events.

Timothy Xu, chair and CEO of Universal Music Greater China, voiced strong excitement regarding the new venture. "We are thrilled to welcome Jason Zhang into the UMGC family. His exceptional musical talent has left a profound mark on Chinese music and culture," Xu stated. "This expanded, all-encompassing relationship is designed to fuel the next phase of Jason's career. Working alongside his personal label, Planet Culture, we look forward to introducing his music to fresh audiences both within China and across the globe." Zhang echoed these sentiments, remarking, "Universal Music has established deep roots in the Greater China music sector and truly grasps the core aspirations of Chinese musicians. Combined with its extensive global music network, it is without a doubt the ideal partner for my upcoming musical chapter. Going forward, the entire Planet Culture team and I will collaborate closely with Universal. Staying rooted in domestic Chinese music, we will meticulously craft authentic works, bringing original Mandarin pop to Asia and the rest of the world. Our goal is to let global audiences experience the power of integrated Mandopop." Industry analysts believe this deal could open doors for more Chinese artists seeking international exposure, particularly as Mandopop continues to gain momentum on worldwide streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.

In a distinct move, Universal Music Group has announced a strategic investment in Solution One (S1), a premier Thai music distribution and publishing firm. Founded in 2001 by CEO Karlcharn Kongkatong and co-founder Apsornsopha Sariman, S1 offers a wide array of services, including music distribution, publishing, production, licensing, and artist development. Its publishing division, D1, launched in 2017, specializes in royalty collection, rights management, and catalog growth. S1's content partners consistently rank among Thailand's top performers on YouTube and streaming platforms, covering genres like Luk Thung, Song for Life, T-Pop, regional folk-pop, and original soundtracks for Boys Love and Girls Love drama series. Thailand's recorded music market is the largest in Southeast Asia, representing 23.8% of the region's total recorded music revenue, as per the IFPI's 2026 annual report. This investment builds on an earlier partnership between S1, Virgin Music Group, and Universal Music Publishing Group, signaling UMG's increasing dedication to the rapidly evolving music landscape in the region.

Calvin Wong, CEO of Universal Music Southeast Asia and Korea and senior VP of Asia, commented on the agreement. "This partnership underscores our ongoing commitment to Thai music and marks an exciting advancement in our strategy to strengthen our foothold in high-growth markets," Wong said. "We are delighted to collaborate closely with Karl, a visionary entrepreneur who has built the largest local distribution network in Thailand, and to help take S1 to new heights." Kongkatong added, "This partnership is a crucial milestone for the future of Thai music. By merging S1's digital distribution and production expertise with D1's publishing and rights management capabilities, alongside UMG's global infrastructure, we are forging a stronger platform to introduce Thai artists, creators, and intellectual property to audiences worldwide." Sariman, who serves as co-founder and general counsel for both entities, noted, "We believe that lasting value in the music industry is built through robust rights management, sustainable partnerships, and investment in creative talent. This partnership opens up new avenues to further expand the global presence of Thai music and entertainment." Kongkatong will continue to lead both S1 and D1 as CEO, ensuring operational stability. This development is viewed as part of a larger trend where major record labels are investing in local infrastructure to tap into the vibrant and varied music scenes across Southeast Asia.
