Teyana Taylor Named Icon of the Year for the 2026 BET Awards

Teyana Taylor, a Golden Globe-winning actress and Grammy-nominated musician, has been named the Icon of the Year for the 2026 BET Awards. The ceremony is scheduled for a live broadcast on Sunday, June 28, originating from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Comedian and actor Druski will serve as the host for the evening. This honor places Taylor among a select group of entertainers who have been recognized for their enduring impact on the industry.

The "Icon of the Year" award, as detailed in an official announcement, is designed to celebrate an artist whose influence permeates culture across generations. It is described as an acknowledgment of "someone whose impact isn’t measured in years but in the undeniable weight they carry in every room, every conversation, and every corner of the culture they touch." Taylor, who hails from Harlem, New York, has increasingly come to personify this standard. Her career has undergone a remarkable transformation from a multi-platinum singer-songwriter to an award-winning actress, while also establishing her as a director, producer, choreographer, and fashion tastemaker. For context, the Peacock Theater, formerly known as the Microsoft Theater, has been a primary venue for major televised award shows, including the Emmys and the Grammys, since its opening in 2007.

Over the past five years, Taylor's artistic achievements have been particularly notable. She won a Critics' Choice Award for her role in the Sundance film "A Thousand and One," secured a Golden Globe for best supporting actress, and received an Academy Award nomination for her work in Paul Thomas Anderson’s "One Battle After Another." Her visual album "Escape Room" also earned a Grammy nomination for best R&B album. Furthermore, she starred alongside Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in the Netflix action thriller "The Rip" and joined the ensemble cast of Ryan Murphy’s Hulu series "All’s Fair." "Teyana Taylor is the embodiment of what it means to be an icon in this moment," stated Connie Orlando, BET's executive vice president of specials, music programming, and music strategy. "She doesn’t ask for a seat at the table; she builds the table, designs the rooms, and sets the tone for everyone who walks in." Additional honorees, performers, and presenters for the BET Awards are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.
