Show moreMichael Giacchino Officially Boards Brad Bird’s ‘Ray Gunn’ With Score Recorded at Abbey Road Studios (EXCLUSIVE)
Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino, celebrated for his emotive score for Pixar's "Up," has officially committed to crafting the music for Brad Bird's forthcoming Netflix animated feature, "Ray Gunn." This marks their sixth collaborative project, a creative partnership that began with the groundbreaking 2004 Pixar film "The Incredibles." Their shared body of work also includes such acclaimed titles as "Ratatouille," the high-octane "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol," the ambitious "Tomorrowland," and the long-awaited sequel "Incredibles 2." Notably, the score for this new film was recently recorded at the historic Abbey Road Studios in London, a venue synonymous with iconic film soundtracks and, of course, serving as the creative birthplace of The Beatles' most famous albums. Giacchino's ability to blend orchestral grandeur with intimate melodies has made him a sought-after figure in Hollywood, a fact underscored by his recent work on "The Batman" and the video game "Medal of Honor" series.
Set within a sprawling, alternate-reality metropolis named Metropia—a city imagined through the stylistic lens of 1939, evoking the visual aesthetic of classic film noir—"Ray Gunn" presents an original futuristic detective narrative. The voice cast is led by Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Waits. Rockwell takes on the role of the titular private investigator, Raymond Gunn, whose latest case entangles him in a web of "aliens, murder and a multimedia star named Venus Nova," as described by the official logline. Johansson is set to voice the enigmatic Nova, while Waits, known for his gravelly voice and eccentric roles, lends his distinctive presence to an as-yet-unnamed character. The film is being produced by Skydance Animation, a studio that forged an exclusive multi-year distribution deal with Netflix in 2023. Their first collaborative release under this agreement was "Swapped," which premiered last month featuring a voice cast that included Michael B. Jordan, Juno Temple, and Tracy Morgan. This partnership is a strategic move for Skydance, providing a direct pipeline to Netflix's vast subscriber base, which industry reports estimate at over 260 million globally. Analysts suggest this deal positions Skydance to compete more aggressively with established players like Pixar and DreamWorks in the streaming arena.
Brad Bird, whose last directorial effort was 2018's "Incredibles 2," offered high praise for his frequent collaborator's distinctive methodology. "One of the reasons I loved working with Michael again on 'Ray Gunn' is that he treats the orchestra like a living organism," Bird explained. "He insists on having all the musicians in the same room, feeding off each other's energy, and you can truly hear the difference in the final product. It’s the same philosophy I apply to my animators—they are not an afterthought; they are the very foundation of the thought." This approach stands in contrast to the increasingly common practice of recording instrumental sections separately in modern film scoring, a trend Bird has openly criticized for lacking spontaneity. Giacchino, whose diverse portfolio also includes scores for "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" and the "Jurassic World" series, reflected on their enduring creative bond. "Working with Brad on 'Ray Gunn' still feels like two kids meeting in a park to excitedly talk about 'Jonny Quest,'" he said. "We grew up with a shared love for the same stories and genres, and that genuine excitement hasn't faded. That collective enthusiasm is channeled directly into the energy of the films we create together."
Bird conceived the original story for "Ray Gunn" and co-wrote the screenplay with Matthew Robbins, a veteran screenwriter known for collaborations with Steven Spielberg on films like "The Sugarland Express." While an exact release date has yet to be announced, the film is scheduled to premiere on Netflix later this year. This project marks a significant milestone for Skydance Animation's expanding portfolio, signaling the studio's ambition to become a dominant force in the streaming animation sector. The collaboration with Netflix, a platform synonymous with global distribution, offers Skydance a direct route to a massive audience, a factor that industry analysts believe will be crucial for the film's success in a competitive market. With Bird's track record of blending nostalgic storytelling with cutting-edge animation, "Ray Gunn" is poised to be one of the most anticipated releases of the year.
