Show moreTaylor Swift Tears Up While Thanking Family During Songwriters Hall of Fame Acceptance Speech: ‘You’re the Reason I’m Here Tonight’
Pop superstar Taylor Swift commanded the spotlight at the Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony held Thursday night at New York City's Marriott Marquis Hotel, delivering an expansive 21-minute acceptance speech. The event stretched past midnight, featuring a warm-up tribute performance by Sombr, who played Swift's hits "Cardigan" and "Dear John" before she took the stage. During her remarks, the 36-year-old artist reflected deeply on her career trajectory, expressing profound gratitude to her family for their sacrifices. "Choosing songwriting over everything else was easy for me," Swift said. "But it couldn't have been simple for my parents and brother to relocate our entire family from Pennsylvania to Nashville so I could refine my skills in the songwriting capital of the world. Once they realized this wasn't just a temporary teen phase, they uprooted their lives to move me to Music City. Though words are my forte, I'll never fully convey my gratitude for that. You're why I'm here tonight."
Swift also acknowledged filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who introduced her, sharing the backstory of his involvement. "Months ago, when the Songwriters Hall of Fame asked about my heroes and those who influenced my storytelling, I named Steven," she explained. "About an hour later, to my delight, I was on the phone with him and his famously vibrant wife, Kate Capshaw, who's here tonight. He agreed to attend, even with his major film 'Disclosure Day' premiering at midnight. I tried to give him an out, given the scheduling challenges. But Kate said something unforgettable: 'Good and true things are easy.' Looking back on my 23-year career—the highs and lows, industry struggles, criticism both fair and unfair, loss of privacy, world tours, and the magical chaos of this path—songwriting was the simplest part." During the event, Swift sat with her fiancé Travis Kelce, alongside their mothers Andrea Swift and Donna Kelce, with Spielberg at their table. The 2026 induction class included Alanis Morissette, Kenny Loggins, Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons of Kiss, Terry Britten & Graham Lyle, and Walter Afanasieff. At 36, Swift becomes the second-youngest inductee ever and the youngest woman to receive the honor; only Stevie Wonder, inducted at 32 in 1983, was younger. Industry analyst Mark Sutherland noted, "Swift's induction underscores her lasting impact on songwriting, blending personal narrative with universal appeal in a way few artists achieve." The Songwriters Hall of Fame, founded in 1969, honors those who have shaped music through their lyrical and compositional contributions, making Swift's recognition particularly noteworthy given her relatively young age. This milestone places her alongside legends like Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney, who were inducted later in their careers, highlighting how Swift's early mastery of songcraft has already left an indelible mark on the industry.
Swift's Hall of Fame appearance capped a busy week of high-profile engagements. On Tuesday, she surprised attendees at the Los Angeles premiere of "Toy Story 5" with a live performance, debuting "I Knew It, I Knew You" for the first time and duetting with Randy Newman on "You've Got a Friend in Me." "It means the world to me to be a small part of the universe of these films," she told the audience. "'Toy Story 5' is my favorite of all the 'Toy Storys.' I'm so lucky I get to be a part of this." Commenting on the film, she added, "It's insanely beautiful. It's a masterpiece." The following day, she traveled to New York to attend Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, where the Knicks faced the San Antonio Spurs. Seated courtside, Swift sported an orange and blue t-shirt honoring the hometown team, emblazoned with the words "Stevie Knicks." She was joined by Alana and Este Haim, who wore similar shirts reading "Knickelback" and "Knickole Kidman." Madison Square Garden, a historic venue opened in 1968, has hosted countless iconic sports and music events, adding to the evening's significance.
