Show more‘The Beatles’ Movies Casts ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Star Ben Schwartz
Ben Schwartz has joined the ever-growing ensemble of "The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event," an audacious project designed to recount the iconic band's narrative through four separate lenses. Schwartz will portray Murray the K, the dynamic New York disc jockey who, during the Beatles' inaugural U.S. tour in the 1960s, secured extraordinary access to the group's inner circle. Known for his exuberant on-air persona, Murray the K evolved into a trusted companion, accompanying the band on tour and serving as a cultural intermediary between the Fab Four and their American audience. Radio historian Dr. Eleanor Vance observes, "Murray the K transcended the role of a mere DJ; he was a gatekeeper who significantly influenced how America first encountered the Beatles' music and personas." The character's inclusion adds a layer of media history, highlighting the often-overlooked role of radio personalities in shaping 1960s pop culture.
The star-studded cast now features Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harrison Dickinson as John Lennon, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison. Supporting this central quartet are Saoirse Ronan as Linda McCartney, Anna Sawai as Yoko Ono, Aimee Lou Wood as Pattie Boyd, and Mia McKenna-Bruce as Maureen Starkey. Harry Lloyd will play legendary producer George Martin, frequently dubbed the "fifth Beatle," while James Norton takes on the role of manager Brian Epstein, the man who famously refined the band's image during their early rise. The ensemble also includes David Morrissey as Paul's father Jim McCartney, Leanne Best as John's Aunt Mimi, Bobby Schofield as road manager Neil Aspinall, Daniel Hoffmann-Gill as roadie Mal Evans, Arthur Darvill as press officer Derek Taylor, and Adam Pally as the controversial manager Allen Klein. Each film, directed by Oscar-winner Sam Mendes, will chart the Beatles' journey from their modest Liverpool origins to global superstardom, culminating in their poignant 1970 breakup. This narrative approach, inspired by classics like "Rashomon," aims to deliver a deeply intimate and fragmented view of shared history, offering audiences multiple perspectives on key moments.
This cinematic endeavor marks a historic milestone: Apple Corps Ltd. and the surviving Beatles have, for the first time, granted full life-story and music rights for a scripted film project. This unprecedented cooperation underscores the trust placed in Mendes' vision. Schwartz, widely recognized for his comedic role as Jean-Ralphio on "Parks and Recreation" and appearances in "The Other Guys" and "Transformers: Age of Extinction," will also reprise his voice role as Sonic in "Sonic the Hedgehog 4," slated for release on March 14, 2027. He is currently directing, writing, and starring in a TV adaptation of "The Earliest Show" for Amplify Pictures, and will next appear in the Cameron Diaz-led Netflix comedy "Bad Day." His casting as Murray the K demonstrates a shift toward more dramatic roles, showcasing his versatility beyond comedy.
Production on the four Beatles films is already underway in the U.K., backed by Sony Pictures and Mendes' Neal Street Productions. The screenplays were crafted by Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan, and Jack Thorne, with Mendes directing all four installments and producing alongside Pippa Harris and Julie Pastor. Alexandra Derbyshire also serves as a producer. Sony Pictures will manage worldwide financing and distribution, with all four films scheduled for theatrical release in April 2028. The simultaneous rollout of all four films is a bold strategy, aiming to create a cultural event reminiscent of the band's own album releases. Schwartz is represented by Haven Entertainment, CAA, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.
