Show more‘KPop Demon Hunters’: Lego Releases New Sets Inspired by Derpy and Sussie Bird
Fans of the animated sensation "KPop Demon Hunters" have fresh reason to celebrate. To mark the film's first anniversary, Lego is releasing an 825-piece building set inspired by the characters Derpy and Sussie Bird. This highly anticipated product will be available for global pre-order on LEGO.com, with a physical in-store launch scheduled for August 1. The set allows builders to recreate the mischievous supernatural messenger and his ever-watchful avian companion, offering a tangible piece of the Netflix hit for their homes.
In the film, Derpy is portrayed as a clumsy supernatural tiger from the underworld, whose endearing habit of knocking over flowerpots and failing to right them has captured audiences' hearts. His character design draws from the babo horangi, a recurring figure in Korean minhwa—a traditional folk painting style that flourished during the Joseon era. This cultural depth enriches the whimsical narrative with authenticity. According to toy industry analyst Sarah Kim, "The inclusion of such a specific folkloric reference not only enhances the story but also serves as an educational gateway for global audiences to explore Korean heritage." Last year, Mattel and Hasbro were named global co-master toy licensees for the franchise, and themed products like Uno, Monopoly, and character dolls have already been released, with more items on the way. The Lego set, with its intricate design, is expected to appeal to both collectors and younger fans, further expanding the franchise's reach.
The announcement coincides with the broader "KPop Demon Hunters" first anniversary celebrations. On June 20, Netflix will host a Livestream Celebration on its TikTok page, encouraging fans to raise their "light sticks" in a virtual show of support. The film originally premiered on Netflix on June 20, 2025, and quickly became one of the platform's most successful original films. Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the story follows KPop girl group Huntr/X, who lead double lives as demon hunters. Its viewership surged after release; according to end-of-year Nielsen data, it was by far the most-streamed movie of 2025, accumulating an astonishing 20.5 billion viewing minutes in the U.S. alone. This record-breaking performance underscores the film's broad appeal, blending music, fantasy, and action into a cohesive experience that resonated with diverse demographics. The film's success has also spurred discussions about a potential sequel, with Kang reportedly hinting at new storylines during a recent interview.
The accolades for the film have been equally remarkable. Earlier this year, EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami—the singing voices of Huntr/X—won a Grammy when their track "Golden" was awarded Best Song Written for Visual Media. Just weeks later, the same song took home the Oscar for Best Original Song, while the film itself triumphed in the Best Animated Feature category. This dual recognition from both the music and film industries highlights the project's unique cross-genre appeal. With the Lego set and ongoing toy releases, the franchise shows no signs of slowing down, cementing its status as a cultural phenomenon that merges KPop energy, folklore, and blockbuster animation. Industry experts predict that such integrated media strategies will become more common, as studios seek to leverage multiple entertainment sectors to maximize audience engagement and revenue streams. The continued expansion of the "KPop Demon Hunters" universe underscores the growing trend of transmedia storytelling in modern entertainment.
