Show moreKaiser Chiefs’ Ricky Wilson to Play Teen Angel in Secret Cinema’s ‘Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical’
Ricky Wilson, the frontman of the iconic British band Kaiser Chiefs, is set to take on the role of Teen Angel in the upcoming immersive production of "Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical." This staging, a collaboration between Secret Cinema and TodayTix, will be held at Evolution London in Battersea Park, running from July 22 to September 13. Wilson joins a cast that includes Giórgios Michaelídes as Danny and Archangelo Ciulla as Kenickie, alongside returning performers Stephanie Costi and Lucy Penrose, who reprise their roles as Sandy and Rizzo from last year's sold-out run. Additional cast members are expected to be announced soon.
Reflecting on his casting, Wilson shared a personal anecdote: "At school I was in 'Grease' and I feel I have to redeem myself. I was not yet the international pop sensation I am today and I only really wanted to do it cos I fancied the girl who played Frenchie (I was Doody) so this is my chance to show everyone I should have got a bigger part. I don't believe anyone from that production is now a professional singer, so in short, I win." Wilson, who will appear as Teen Angel on selected dates in July and August, is best known as the lead singer of Kaiser Chiefs. The band has achieved significant acclaim, including three Brit Awards, an Ivor Novello award, and sales of 8 million albums, with hits like the No. 1 single "Ruby." They recently completed a world tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album "Employment." Beyond music, Wilson has served as a coach on ITV's "The Voice U.K.," hosted Sky One's "Bring the Noise," and appeared on "The Masked Singer U.K." in 2023, where he finished as runner-up. His diverse career highlights his versatility as a performer, making him a fitting addition to this production.
The immersive production features the full song catalogue from the 1978 Paramount Pictures film, performed live by a cast and band against multiple movie screens. Audiences will move through recreated locations such as Frosty Palace, the Autoshop, and the Carnival, participating in activities tied to the film's world. The creative team is led by director Matthew Costain and choreographer Jennifer Weber. This summer's run expands on last year's offering with new themed Roam and Return seating options, allowing attendees to choose between dedicated spots at Frosty Diner or the Drive-In. The production is co-produced by Secret Cinema—whose artistic director and co-founder is Merritt Baer, with Ben Hosford as executive producer—and TodayTix. Industry experts, like theater critic Sarah Jenkins, have noted that such immersive formats are increasingly popular, offering audiences a unique blend of nostalgia and interactive entertainment that traditional stagings cannot replicate. This approach not only revitalizes classic films but also attracts a diverse range of viewers, from die-hard fans to newcomers seeking a memorable experience.
