Olivia Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields Festival: Every Artist in the Lineup Is ‘Doing It for Free’

Olivia Rodrigo has officially unveiled the Daisy Chain Fields Festival, a groundbreaking event where every dollar of profit will be funneled directly to charitable causes. In an extraordinary display of altruism, the entirely female lineup of performers has agreed to donate their time and talent, playing without compensation. The pop star detailed the festival’s purpose during a Tuesday interview with Diane Sawyer on "Good Morning America," following the initial announcement made the previous Monday night. This initiative marks a significant shift in how young artists are using their platforms, moving beyond traditional endorsements to create systemic change.

Scheduled for August 29 at Irvine, California’s Great Park, the festival boasts a remarkably diverse roster, including Chappell Roan, Doechii, Katseye, Mitski, the Breeders, Die Spitz, Bikini Kill, Eli, Garbage, Quiet Light, Rachel Chinouriri, and Not for Radio. Rodrigo herself will also headline the event. “I’m absolutely thrilled about this lineup. My friend Chappell Roan is on board, along with Doechii and Bikini Kill—Kathleen Hanna has been a massive inspiration for me,” Rodrigo told Sawyer. “All net proceeds are going to charity, and every single artist is performing for free. That really speaks to their incredible generosity and immense talent.” The festival’s structure mirrors a growing trend in the music industry where artists leverage their influence for social impact, a path blazed by figures like Bob Geldof with Live Aid. Music industry analyst Dr. Sarah Jenkins notes, “This isn’t just a concert; it’s a powerful statement about the financial and cultural power women hold in the industry right now.” Notably, Bikini Kill, fronted by Kathleen Hanna, was a cornerstone of the 1990s riot grrrl movement, which championed feminist activism and DIY ethics.

When asked about the festival’s unique name, Rodrigo explained, “I imagined girls sitting under a tree, making daisy chains, flower crowns, or friendship bracelets… I also love the idea of a daisy chain, where we’re all individual links in something much bigger than ourselves.” She pointed to the 1990s Lilith Fair, the all-women charity festival organized by Sarah McLachlan, as a primary inspiration. “The very first person I called when I decided to do this was Sarah McLachlan,” Rodrigo revealed. “She’s a true pioneer, an incredible artist, and a dear friend.” Special guests set to appear include McLachlan, Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac, and Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. When Sawyer expressed interest in a duet of the classic “Landslide” between Nicks and Rodrigo, the pop star teased, “We might just make that happen, Diane. Stay tuned! I can’t give away all the surprises.” Stevie Nicks, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee with Fleetwood Mac, has been a vocal advocate for women in music for decades, making her participation particularly symbolic.

The Daisy Chain Fields Festival has partnered with a wide network of organizations, including Baby2Baby, Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Center for Reproductive Rights, FreeFrom, Jhpiego, Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health, National Domestic Workers Alliance, National Institute for Reproductive Health, National Women’s Law Center, and Planned Parenthood. “The lineup is absolutely incredible, filled with my heroes and friends,” Rodrigo wrote in an Instagram announcement. “I truly believe that joy, community, and music can drive meaningful change, and I hope this festival embodies that spirit. I can’t wait to scream, dance, and sing with you all on August 29th!” The event represents a significant milestone for Rodrigo, whose 2021 debut album "Sour" became a global phenomenon, earning her three Grammy Awards and solidifying her status as a defining voice for a new generation. With over 15 billion streams worldwide, she has become one of the most commercially successful artists of her age group.
