Show moreAnthony Hopkins Signed by Decca Classics; First Album of Music Composed by Oscar-Winning Actor Set for August Release
At 88 years old, Sir Anthony Hopkins—widely celebrated for his chilling, Oscar-winning portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs"—has quietly cultivated a substantial parallel career as a composer for over six decades. The actor has now partnered with the esteemed Decca Classics label to launch an ambitious recording project that compiles more than sixty years of his original musical works. Titled "Life Is a Dream," the album features pieces conducted by the globally renowned Gustavo Dudamel and performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra. It is scheduled for release on August 21, with the debut single, "Bracken Road," having dropped on Friday. This track is drawn from Hopkins' earlier composition, "1947: Suite for Solo Piano and Orchestra."
According to Decca, "Bracken Road" offers a "nostalgic musical portrait" of the landscape surrounding Hopkins' childhood home in Margam, South Wales, during the 1940s, evoking its streets, meadows, and mountains. Hopkins, who began playing piano at age four and was performing works by Beethoven and Chopin shortly thereafter, also composed music for local theater productions as a teenager. "Music was my first desire, my first wish," Hopkins explained. "I've been composing music all my life. Some of these pieces have lived with me for decades and I still find myself returning to them." The album includes "My Fatherland," which incorporates traditional Welsh melodies, alongside pieces inspired by cinema, his wife, and his niece. Entirely self-taught as a composer, Hopkins previously won a Classic Brit Award for Album of the Year in 2012 for his contribution to "And the Waltz Goes On." He made his live musical performance debut in Saudi Arabia in 2025 with the "Life Is a Dream" concert, executed by Britain's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Notably, Hopkins' passion for music has been a constant thread throughout his life, often serving as a creative outlet between film projects, with some compositions dating back to his youth in Wales.
Reflecting on this collaboration, Hopkins expressed deep gratitude. "Signing with Decca is the honor of a lifetime," he remarked. "It has been a true privilege to collaborate with the distinguished Philharmonia Orchestra and the virtuoso soloists, cellist Gregorio Nieto and classical pianist Sergio Tiempo. My deepest gratitude and respect go to Maestro Gustavo Dudamel, whose artistry is an integral part of this musical journey. With the graceful precision of his baton, he transformed each note with profound and indelible meaning, creating a pictorial landscape that invites the listener to feel and imagine something uniquely personal." Dudamel, the acclaimed Venezuelan conductor who has led both the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, praised Hopkins' musical abilities. "Sir Anthony Hopkins is one of those rare artists whose creative voice transcends any single medium," Dudamel stated. "The same depth of imagination, humanity, and emotional truth that has defined his extraordinary work on stage and screen is present in his music. Listening to his composition, I am struck by its beauty, craftsmanship, and the unmistakable sense of wonder that animates it." This partnership underscores how Hopkins, known for his intense film roles, channels similar emotional depth into his compositions, offering a fresh perspective on his artistic legacy.
Laura Monks, president of Decca Classics, added her own commendation. "It is such a privilege to have the great Sir Anthony Hopkins join Decca Classics," she said. "His depth of talent and classical music knowledge, honed over a lifetime, is a joy to celebrate with this new album. Hearing his incredible compositions come to life at the recording sessions in London with Gustavo Dudamel and the Philharmonia Orchestra was a once in a lifetime experience that we are excited to bring to the world." Decca Classics, a historic label founded in 1929, boasts a storied legacy of recording classical music icons, from Luciano Pavarotti to Renée Fleming. Hopkins' signing represents a unique addition to their roster, blending Hollywood prestige with classical artistry. The album "Life Is a Dream" is anticipated to provide listeners with a deeply personal window into the actor's lifelong devotion to music, with industry observers noting that Hopkins' compositions reflect a refined sensibility cultivated over decades. As Hopkins himself observed, the project signifies a culmination of a creative journey that began in childhood and has now found a renewed global audience, bridging the worlds of cinema and classical music in an unprecedented manner.
