Apple has announced its first subscription price hike for Apple Music since late 2022, attributing the move to escalating costs associated with music licensing. The new rates took immediate effect across several international markets, including the United States. For U.S. subscribers, the individual plan now costs $11.99 per month, up from $10.99, while the family plan—which supports up to six accounts—has jumped from $16.99 to $19.99 monthly. The student plan, tailored for verified university attendees, has risen to $6.99 per month, compared to its previous $5.99 price point. In a statement, Apple explained, "Due to rising licensing costs, Apple Music is adjusting its subscription pricing starting today." Notably, despite these increases, Apple Music remains marginally cheaper than its primary rival, Spotify, on several key subscription tiers.
Earlier this year, Spotify implemented its own price adjustments in the U.S., raising its individual premium plan from $11.99 to $12.99 per month and its family plan—also covering up to six users—from $19.99 to $21.99 monthly. Industry analysts point out that streaming platforms have been contending with growing royalty payments to record labels and artists, a trend that has increasingly strained profit margins across the sector. "The music streaming market is approaching saturation, and price increases are becoming a necessary strategy for sustainable growth," noted Sarah Jenkins, a media analyst at TechInsights, in a recent interview. Apple Music, which launched in 2015, offers access to over 100 million songs without advertisements, along with features like offline downloads, exclusive artist content, curated playlists, and high-quality Spatial Audio and lossless audio options. The Cupertino-based tech giant, renowned for its iPhone and Mac product lines, has deeply integrated these music services into its ecosystem, enabling seamless syncing across devices such as the Apple Watch and HomePod. This integration is a key differentiator, as it locks users into a broader Apple experience, potentially reducing churn even as prices rise.
Apple reported that in 2025, Apple Music achieved record highs in both listenership and new subscriber numbers, though the company has not disclosed specific figures. Recent additions to the service include Lyrics Translation and Pronunciation tools, AutoMix, Library Pins, and in-app Replay statistics. The Apple Music Sing feature has also been enhanced, allowing users to turn their iPhone into a microphone that amplifies their voice through a connected TV, making karaoke-style experiences more accessible. These innovations aim to retain subscribers even as prices climb, positioning Apple Music as a competitive force in a crowded market. The pricing strategy mirrors broader industry trends, where streaming services like Netflix and Disney+ have similarly adjusted rates to reflect rising content costs. As the landscape shifts, experts predict that further price adjustments may occur, driven by ongoing negotiations with record labels and the need to invest in exclusive content and cutting-edge technology. For instance, the competition for exclusive artist rights, such as Taylor Swift's 2023 deal with Universal Music Group, continues to inflate licensing expenses across the board.
