Show more‘George Michael: The Faith Tour’ Concert Tour Film Acquired by Bleecker Street, Universal Pictures Content Group
The global distribution rights for the concert film "George Michael: The Faith Tour" have been secured by Universal Pictures Content Group, which will handle its international release. In North America, the rollout will be managed by Crosswalk, the event cinema division of Bleecker Street. The footage was captured at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy—now known as the Accor Arena, a world-renowned venue that has hosted icons such as David Bowie and Madonna—during the European leg of the Faith Tour in 1988. This release includes previously unseen material of the legendary singer, offering fans a long-awaited opportunity to experience a high-quality visual document of that era. For pop music enthusiasts, it provides a rare window into a pivotal chapter of music history, a period when Michael was at the height of his solo success following his departure from Wham!. Industry analysts have noted that such archival releases can significantly boost streaming numbers and introduce classic acts to new audiences, a trend seen with similar posthumous projects.
The film was directed by Andy Morahan and David Austin, both longtime collaborators of Michael. Morahan is renowned for helming iconic music videos like "Last Christmas," "Faith," and "Careless Whisper," while Austin's credits include "George Michael: Freedom Uncut" and "George Michael at the Palais Garnier, Paris." Together, they have transformed archival material—captured during a 14-camera shoot on 35mm film over two nights—into a cinematic and auditory spectacle. The presentation opens with an original short film by Mary McCartney titled "Finding Faith," which features voice-over from Michael during an unheard interview, alongside unseen photographs by Herb Ritts and behind-the-scenes footage from the "Faith" music video. Mary McCartney, a noted photographer and filmmaker and the daughter of Paul McCartney, has directed documentaries like "If These Walls Could Sing," lending additional artistic credibility to the project. The film is slated for a late 2026 worldwide theatrical release in premium formats, with Bleecker Street partnering with Imax for exclusive early access screenings in the United States. This strategy mirrors successful recent releases in the event cinema space, such as Taylor Swift's "The Eras Tour," which demonstrated the lucrative potential of bringing concert experiences to theaters.
The deal was negotiated by Helen Parker for Universal Pictures Content Group and Avy Eschenasy for Bleecker Street. Parker remarked, "George at the height of the Faith tour was simply electrifying—there’s a magnetic force of charisma and connection with the audience that feels just as powerful today as it did then." She emphasized that the cinematic presentation makes it special for those who remember the era and aims to introduce a new generation to his artistry. Bleecker Street CEO Kent Sanderson called Michael an icon at the peak of his creative power during the Faith tour, noting that the restored footage and intimate interviews offer a front-row seat to a beloved artist at his zenith. Michael, who was a founding member of the duo Wham! alongside school friend Andrew Ridgeley, sold over 100 million albums across nearly four decades. Wham!, formed in 1981, produced hits like "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" and "Last Christmas" before disbanding in 1986. After the split, Michael's solo career skyrocketed with his debut album "Faith," which sold more than 25 million copies and won a Grammy. Michael, whose real name was Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, died at age 53 in 2016, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate worldwide, as evidenced by the enduring popularity of his music on streaming platforms. For context, "Faith" was certified Diamond in the United States, and its title track topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks, cementing his status as a global superstar.
Ken Danquah, Chief Finance & Commercial Officer of Mercury Studios, expressed pride in the film's craftsmanship and excitement about partnering with Universal Pictures Content Group and Crosswalk, citing their expertise in delivering immersive cinematic events. Lucie Avery, general manager of Globe Originals, highlighted the honor of bringing the Faith Tour to audiences, noting that Mercury Studios and George Michael Entertainment worked closely to honor his timeless legacy. Alongside the theatrical release, George Michael Entertainment and Sony Music Entertainment will release "The Faith Tour," an 18-track live album of previously unreleased recordings featuring hits from Michael's Wham! and solo catalogs, offering fans a comprehensive audio experience that complements the visual one. This dual release strategy underscores the enduring demand for Michael's work, with industry experts noting that such archival projects often reignite interest in an artist's catalog, potentially introducing his music to younger listeners who may have missed his heyday. For example, the posthumous release of "Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1" reissues saw a notable spike in streams, suggesting that "The Faith Tour" could similarly captivate a new generation of fans while satisfying longtime devotees.
