Billie Eilish Concert Movie ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft’ Sets Paramount+ Streaming Date

Paramount+ has announced that "Billie Eilish — Hit Me Hard And Soft: The Tour (Live)" will debut on its streaming platform starting August 6. The concert film, which first hit theaters on May 8, has already amassed $10 million in box office revenue across the United States and Canada, with global earnings reaching $27 million. This cinematic project, co-directed by Eilish and renowned filmmaker James Cameron—best known for directing "Titanic" and "Avatar"—represents the singer's third foray into concert filmmaking. The footage was captured during two performances on her completely sold-out headline tour: one at the AO Arena in Manchester, England, and another at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Interestingly, the Footprint Center, which serves as the home arena for the NBA's Phoenix Suns, has hosted numerous major artists over the years, underscoring Eilish's widespread appeal across diverse markets.

What sets this production apart is its groundbreaking use of virtual reality 3D technology, developed in collaboration with Meta Platforms and Cameron's Lightstorm Vision. This innovative approach aims to redefine the traditional concert film by offering an immersive experience that makes viewers at home feel as though they are part of the live audience. The setlist spans Eilish's entire career, featuring live renditions of hits like "bad guy," "What Was I Made For?"—the Oscar-winning song from Greta Gerwig's "Barbie"—alongside "Happier Than Ever," "Birds of a Feather," and "when the party's over." The production boasts an extensive team of producers, including Cameron, Eilish, Maria Wilhelm, John Brooks, Geoff Burdick, Paul Clarke, Maggie Baird (Eilish's mother and a prominent advocate for sustainable food systems), Justin Lubliner, John Janick, Steve Berman, Chelsea Dodson, Jason Owen, and Michelle An, with Mikael Borglund serving as executive producer. According to music journalist Sarah Thompson, this fusion of virtual reality and live performance could potentially establish a new benchmark for how artists engage with fans in the digital space, possibly influencing the direction of future tour documentaries.

This release marks Eilish's third concert film, following her 2021 debut "Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles," directed by Robert Rodriguez and Patrick Osborne, which blended animation with live footage. Her second film, "Billie Eilish: Live at the O2," directed by Sam Wrench, premiered in 2023 and documented her historic performances at London's O2 Arena—a venue that has hosted legends from Prince to Beyoncé and is widely regarded as one of the busiest entertainment venues globally. For context, the O2 Arena, which opened in 2007, can accommodate up to 20,000 people and has become a cornerstone of London's live music scene, making it a fitting location for Eilish's milestone shows. Paramount+ is actively expanding its music-focused content library, which already includes scripted projects like the 2024 "Mean Girls" remake, the country music drama "George & Tammy," and the Robbie Williams biopic "Better Man." The platform also offers a variety of documentaries and unscripted series, such as Baz Luhrmann's "EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert," Eminem's "Stans," Alicia Keys' "Uncharted," Cyndi Lauper's "Let The Canary Sing," and "Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza." This growing catalog positions Paramount+ as a significant player in streaming music content, appealing to both casual viewers and dedicated fans alike.
