Trump’s name. Redd, a long-time fixture at the center’s annual holiday concerts, had hosted and performed at these events for years before stepping aside, citing what he called “the defiant and illegal name change happening to the Kennedy Center.” The center, now under the control of Trump allies, aggressively pursued legal action against Redd, with then-president Richard Grenell sending a letter that threatened to seek $1 million in damages for what he termed a “political stunt.” However, in June, D.C. Superior Court Judge Tanya Jones Bosier dismissed the case, ruling that no valid contract existed to be breached. While Redd had engaged in discussions to perform in 2025, as in previous years, the judge noted, “I could not find a valid breach-of-contract claim here. There’s no dispute that he did not sign the 2025 agreement.” The Kennedy Center had contended that Redd had “agreed to a written contract” for a $6,500 fee, even without his signature, but the court disagreed. The Washington Post reported that the center had quietly attempted to settle the dispute before the dismissal, offering to drop the lawsuit if Redd paid $7,500 and agreed to perform on Christmas Eve 2026 without any political commentary or mention of his earlier withdrawal. That proposal was rejected, and the case proceeded to its conclusion. In Monday’s ruling, Jones Bosier determined that the $252,000 in fees was justified, despite the Kennedy Center’s argument that the amount was “out of all proportion to the issue at stake.” She reasoned that the figure reflected the substantial work required of Redd’s legal team in defending against the suit. The Kennedy Center, a renowned cultural institution that has hosted countless iconic performances since its opening in 1971, continues to face fallout from the controversy. Its exterior remains shrouded in a tarp, a remnant of the court-mandated removal of Trump’s name from the building, and a judge has demanded the board explain why the covering has not yet been taken down. For Redd, a respected vibraphonist and drummer who has collaborated with jazz legends like Barney Kessel and Mel Tormé, the ruling marks a definitive end to a legal ordeal that many observers saw as an overreach by the center’s new leadership. Legal experts note that the case underscores the importance of formal agreements in performance contracts, a lesson that may resonate across the arts world.
