Pop superstar Ariana Grande delivered a surprise to her London audience on August 16, bringing her *Wicked* co-star Cynthia Erivo to the stage at the O2 Arena. The duo, who portray Glinda and Elphaba in the blockbuster film adaptations, performed a medley of “For Good” and “Happy Days” during the second U.K. stop of Grande’s Eternal Sunshine Tour. The O2, one of the world’s busiest entertainment venues, has hosted countless iconic performances since its opening in 2007, and this intimate collaboration added another memorable chapter to its history.
Grande’s current tour, named after her seventh studio album, is slated to wrap up with a 10-night residency at the same venue, culminating on September 1. Once the final curtain falls, the 31-year-old artist plans to retreat from the spotlight. Her representative told People in early August that she is eager to finish the run “healthily and happily” before taking a well-earned pause from public-facing work, which has brought relentless scrutiny. This decision came alongside reports that Grande had withdrawn from the West End revival of Stephen Sondheim’s *Sunday in the Park With George*, a production that would have reunited her with Jonathan Bailey, another *Wicked* alum.
The intense public attention on Grande has only intensified in recent years, fueled by her grueling promotional schedule and a constant online focus on her physical appearance. Her eighth album, *Petal*, dropped on July 31, and the accompanying music video for its title track sparked fresh commentary about her look, adding to the pressure she has openly acknowledged. Grande and Erivo, both of whom earned Oscar nominations for their roles in Jon M. Chu’s *Wicked* and its sequel *Wicked: For Good*, have navigated this whirlwind together, with their on-stage chemistry in London serving as a reminder of their artistic bond.
For fans, the duet was a rare treat, blending the theatrical magic of *Wicked* with the pop spectacle of Grande’s tour. Erivo, a Tony Award-winning performer known for her powerful vocals, has become a close collaborator and friend to Grande, and their joint appearance hints at the enduring legacy of their cinematic partnership. As Grande prepares to step back, this London moment may stand as a high point—a graceful exit before she trades the stage for some long-overdue privacy.
