Show moreBlackpink and ‘White Lotus’ Star Lisa Documentary ‘Always Lalisa’ Sets Global Release
Sony Music Vision has unveiled plans for a sweeping global cinematic release of “Always Lalisa,” an intimate documentary chronicling Blackpink member Lisa’s journey, set to hit theaters from October 12. The film will screen in both Imax and conventional formats, underscoring the scale of ambition behind the project. Director Sue Kim’s lens follows a transformative twelve-month period in the artist’s life—her first real departure from the collective identity that propelled her to fame. Across that span, the 27-year-old navigates the demands of a solo recording career, ventures into acting, and works to define a personal brand, all while seeking rare pockets of solitude in an industry that offers little respite.
Behind the scenes, Trafalgar Releasing manages distribution, with a dedicated streaming window on YouTube Premium penciled in for 2026. Tom Mackay, who leads Sony Music Vision, expressed confidence in the documentary’s reach. “Lisa’s artistry has resonated across continents, and we believe this film will spark the same kind of connection,” he said, pointing to a collaborative rollout strategy with YouTube Premium designed to maximize audience exposure. Marc Allenby, CEO of Trafalgar Releasing, described the project as a raw, unfiltered glimpse into Lisa’s evolution from group star to independent force. “This is a chapter fans have eagerly awaited, and we’re thrilled to share it with them on the big screen,” Allenby remarked. Lyor Cohen, YouTube’s global music chief, highlighted Lisa’s deep ties to the platform, where her content routinely draws massive engagement. “This is where millions can feel intimately connected to her creative growth,” Cohen added. Notably, Blackpink—which debuted in 2016—has consistently broken streaming benchmarks, and Lisa’s individual footprint has expanded rapidly since going solo.
Prior to its wide release, “Always Lalisa” will make its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto Film Festival, a launchpad celebrated for elevating documentary storytelling. Lisa’s trajectory shows no sign of deceleration. She recently performed “Goals” alongside Anitta and Rema at the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony, a historic first for any female K-pop artist and for a Thai performer. Her accolades also include a solo set at Coachella 2025, a seat on the 2026 Met Gala host committee—another milestone for a K-pop act—and a presenting role at the 2026 Golden Globes. The singer, often compared to cross-genre peers like BTS’s Jungkook, has expanded into acting with a part as Mook in HBO’s “The White Lotus.” Two Netflix ventures are also in the pipeline: “Tygo,” an action film she stars in and executive produces, plus an untitled romantic comedy. Experts suggest this diversification mirrors a broader trend among K-pop idols seeking longevity beyond music, though few have matched Lisa’s velocity.
On the musical front, anticipation is building for Lisa’s upcoming EP “Press Play,” scheduled for October 23, with the lead track “SaWaDika” dropping September 3. In another industry first, she has secured a Las Vegas residency—unprecedented for a K-pop artist—featuring four performances under the “Viva La Lisa” banner at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on November 13-14 and November 27-28. Tickets vanished in under ten minutes, a clear signal of her commercial clout. The documentary is a collaborative production involving Sony Music Vision, RCA Records, and Tremolo Productions, with additional support from Salt Water Productions and Lloud Co. Sue Kim and Courtney Crockett produce for Salt Water Productions; Morgan Neville and Caitrin Rogers executive produce for Tremolo Productions; Alice Kang and Joojong Joe serve similar roles for Lloud Co.; and Peter Edge, John Fleckenstein, and Camille Yorrick represent RCA Records as executive producers. Krista Wegener and Abby Lynn Kang Davis round out the team alongside Mackay for Sony Music Vision. Industry observers note that the layered release—theatrical, streaming, and a packed calendar—points to a methodical play to solidify Lisa’s standing as a solo powerhouse, independent of her group origins. Whether this momentum translates into lasting crossover success remains a key question, but the groundwork is unmistakably laid.
