Taylor Swift’s ‘Patient Zero’ Music Video, Starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, to Debut at VMAs

Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell have been tapped by Taylor Swift to appear in her upcoming music video. The two Hollywood heavyweights will share the screen with Swift in the visual for "Patient Zero," scheduled to arrive Friday in tandem with her deluxe album, "Life of a Showgirl: The Encore." Swift took the reins as director herself, and the video is slated to premiere during Sunday's MTV VMAs broadcast. The same ceremony will see Swift receive the first-ever Artist-Director Award, a brand-new accolade designed to recognize her growing body of filmmaking work.

A teaser surfaced Thursday on "CBS Mornings" before Swift reposted it across her own platforms. The clip carries a strongly cinematic tone: Swift and Johnson are shown as reflections of one another above a bathroom sink, then plunge underwater and later stand side by side at a gravesite. In one tight shot, Swift is seen crying, and her engagement ring from Travis Kelce is visible for a fleeting moment. Farrell emerges from a car, and eventually all three figures come together, clad head to toe in black. Johnson, known for the "Fifty Shades" trilogy and "The Lost Daughter," and Farrell, who earned an Oscar nomination for "The Banshees of Inisherin," bring serious film credentials to the project. Swift's engagement to Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, has ranked among the most obsessively tracked celebrity narratives of the past year, so even a split-second view of the ring was bound to set off speculation.

Word of the album broke Wednesday, one day after Swift dropped her first hint about "Patient Zero." "The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore" expands on last year's "The Life of a Showgirl" with four additional tracks: "Patient Zero," "Cleveland!," "Pink Clouding" and "Babylon." The original October 2024 release logged the biggest opening week ever recorded for an album, a result that cemented her standing as the most commercially dominant artist of her era. That benchmark eclipsed marks previously set by the likes of Adele and *NSYNC, a reminder of how extraordinary such a debut remains in the streaming age.

When unveiling the project, Swift framed that success as the spark behind the new material. She recounted how fans pulled off "a truly unfathomable thing" about a year prior by powering the record-breaking launch, then remembered marking the moment in Sweden with her two collaborators, Max Martin and Shellback. What began as a trip to savor their gratitude turned into a songwriting session once they realized a studio was free. "We did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs," she wrote, adding that she hopes listeners take to them because they "were born out of pure gratitude." Martin and Shellback, the Swedish production duo behind some of pop's biggest hits of the past two decades, have collaborated with Swift regularly since her 2014 album "1989."
