Lady A’s Charles Kelley Shares Blood Cancer Diagnosis: ‘I’m Confident That We’re Going to Get Through It’

Charles Kelley, a founding member and co-lead vocalist of the Grammy-winning country trio Lady A, has revealed that he is battling multiple myeloma, a relatively uncommon cancer affecting the blood. The 43-year-old musician shared the diagnosis with fans via an Instagram video posted Tuesday, offering only a terse caption: "A little health update." Multiple myeloma originates in plasma cells located in bone marrow and accounts for roughly 1 percent of all cancers in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society.

Kelley explained that the illness came to light almost by chance. He sought medical attention after suffering rib fractures that had no apparent cause, and subsequent blood tests ultimately identified the blood cancer. He characterized multiple myeloma as rare. Over the past ten years, however, an influx of immunomodulatory agents and precision-targeted therapies has dramatically improved survival odds, extending life expectancy for patients well past the projections of a decade ago. Dr. Sarah Holstein, a hematologist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, has noted that "the treatment landscape for multiple myeloma has evolved at an unprecedented pace, with survival rates nearly doubling in some patient groups."

Despite the seriousness of the announcement, Kelley struck an optimistic tone. He emphasized that he is still young and feels physically well, and he expressed gratitude for how far medical science has come. "I feel really hopeful," he said. "I really do." His openness mirrors the candor he displayed during his sobriety journey, which he likened to the current situation: releasing a burden, he said, is liberating and diminishes its hold. Kelley described his mindset as tackling each day as it comes and relinquishing the illusion of control. In 2022, Lady A—formerly known as Lady Antebellum—abbreviated their Request Line Tour so Kelley could prioritize his recovery from alcohol.

Wrapping up the video, Kelley offered both appreciation and determination, describing the cancer as simply another obstacle he believes they will overcome, and pledging to keep fans updated. Meanwhile, Lady A is scheduled to perform a series of holiday shows from Dec. 10 to 21 as part of their "This Winter's Night" tour. The group, whose 2010 hit "Need You Now" won multiple Grammys, has been a staple of country music for over fifteen years.
