Valentín Elizalde’s Legacy Gets a New HBO Max Docuseries & More Uplifting Moments in Latin Music
From career milestones to new music releases to major announcements and those little important moments, Billboard editors highlight uplifting moments in Latin music. Here’s what happened in the Latin music world this week.
HBO Max announced on Wednesday (Oct. 28) a three-part documentary series, Valentín: La muerte del Gallo de Oro, revisiting the life and 2006 killing of regional Mexican music and banda superstar Valentín Elizalde. Set to premiere Nov. 12, the series will draw on archival material and new voices to revisit questions surrounding the case and the enduring legacy of “El Gallo de Oro.”
The announcement has also raised questions about the family’s involvement: Elizalde’s daughter Valentina said publicly that the family had not known about the series and had not authorized it. The project offers a chance to revisit Elizalde’s place in música mexicana, while his family’s concerns remain an important part of the story.
After wrapping his Una Aventura World Tour, Ozuna announced on Tuesday (Oct. 27) that he will return home for Sempiterno, a one-night concert at Puerto Rico’s Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot on Dec. 26. The show will celebrate his catalog of hits while offering fans a preview of his next musical chapter.
“I’ve been wanting to come back and perform for my people in Puerto Rico for a long time,” the singer said in a statement. “Performing at the Choliseo always means so much to me, and this is my way of thanking my fans for all the love and support they’ve shown me since day one.” Tickets are now on sale through Ticketera.
Becky G, Draco Rosa and Colombian business leader Jaime Gilinski will be honored at the 13th annual Maestro Cares Foundation “Changing Lives, Building Dreams” Gala on Nov. 4 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York. The foundation, co-founded by Marc Anthony and music executive Henry Cárdenas, raises funds for programs supporting children and communities across Latin America and the U.S.
Becky G will receive the Voice of Change Award for her advocacy and work supporting education, immigrant families and women and Latino communities. Rosa will receive the Courage to Care Award for his efforts to support people and families facing serious health challenges, while Gilinski will be presented with the Corporate Social Responsibility Award for his business leadership and philanthropy. Marc Anthony is set to perform at the gala.
Rosalía was named Music Innovator at the 16th annual WSJ. Magazine Innovator Awards in New York on Thursday (Oct. 29), joining honorees across fashion, tech, literature, film, sports and comedy. During her acceptance speech, she also paused to acknowledge the deadly train crash in her native Spain and offer support to those affected.
“I would like to send all my love and support to each and every person affected by it,” she said in Spanish. The moment paired recognition of Rosalía’s influence on music and culture with a heartfelt gesture of solidarity toward her home country. Read more about it here and check out her speech below.
