Katseye’s Sophia to Temporarily Step Back From Group to Prioritize Her ‘Mental Health and Wellness’

Sophia Laforteza, a member of the global girl group Katseye, has decided to temporarily withdraw from the group's upcoming promotional schedule, citing a need to focus on her "mental health and wellness." The announcement was made through the group's official Weverse channel, where it was confirmed that Laforteza has the full backing of her bandmates. The statement explained that after "thorough consultations with medical professionals," it was recommended she take an extended period of rest and ongoing treatment to ensure a complete recovery. It also noted that while Laforteza is "eager to perform alongside her members," the group's management places the "health, safety, and long-term well-being of our artists" as the highest priority.

In her own heartfelt message shared on social media, Laforteza expressed deep sadness over the decision, writing, "It truly breaks my heart to have to miss out on a lot." She went on to explain her love for performing and being on stage, but acknowledged the necessity of stepping back. "Making this decision wasn't easy, but I'm learning that health has to come first. I'm realizing that if I don't take care of my mind and body now, I won't be able to keep doing what I love the most for so long," she added. The 22-year-old singer, who was born in Manila and moved to the U.S. to pursue her music career, was notably absent from the premiere of the group's documentary, "Katseye: Wild Hearts," held on Wednesday in Los Angeles. When asked about her absence on the red carpet, fellow member Lara Raj told Variety, "She's not feeling well, but she says hi."

This hiatus is not the first for the group, as member Manon Bannerman also announced a temporary break in February, though she has since returned to activities. Katseye, formed through the Netflix series "Pop Star Academy," consists of six members: Laforteza, Raj, Bannerman, Daniela Avanzini, Megan Skiendiel, and Yoonchae Jeung. The group is currently preparing for the release of their "Wild" EP, scheduled for August 13, which will be followed by a tour in the fall.
